The polytunnel arrived !! and the hoops are up !!

Jock (on the right),aided by his collie Meg and Malcolm , put up the tunnel and waited for a calm day and four other helpers to put on the cover.
Cover on, ready to go, let the growing commence !
Inside the poly tunnel, laying out the paths and the beds

Warm and windfree, it's a lovely place to be .

A happy afternoon was enjoyed on the Primrose Walk
at Laide Community Woodland
at the beginning of the month,
with lots of entrants for the duck race.

Lots of cheering for the duck race

Wilma found a new friend in Charlotte who looked after her very well for the afternoon

The days are getting longer, sunset at 10.20 pm, down by the jetty

Fishing boat at sunset

All aglow at 10.25 pm

Scotch evening mist

The lambs take sleeping very seriously

The old carpet was being used to mulch the docks but the lambs had different ideas

Born together , stay together

Found a beautiful pipit's nest with 3 eggs in the grassy bank on the shore

The nest is just about in the centre of this photogragh, well hidden in the grass

Here's mum
Hatched and hungry. Sadly the next day the nest had been pulled apart and no sign of the chicks

On Wednesday, 14th May Peter Cunningham, biologist
very kindly got out of his sleeping bag
to meet a small group of us at 5am
to walk us through the Laide Community Woodland
to hear and identify the early morning birds.
Thank you Peter.

Jeanette - leader of the gang !

Irene with that lovely smile !

We're safe, they are behind glass

Don't mess with this lot !

Alma, Maureen, Barbara and Diana

Here we have Maureen, cute but an "ex-Hackney Bird", how did we both end up so far from our beginnings ? We both went to the same primary school in Rushmore Road, Hackney E9 !

Told you to watch out for Hackney birds !

You never know what they will get up to next, never challenge them !

Girls with a sweet tooth

Maureen has managed to find the most unusual item of the day, a rhea's egg, equivalent to 6 hen's eggs ! bought at the Store House in Foulis

Here we have the infamous character, "Betty-of-Poolewe", shown here on the right with her bodyguard Jenny.

Approach with caution, you have been warned !
I am joking, Betty is lovely, great fun and she makes a great cup of tea !

Update on April 2014

Hi to everyone reading this blog, hope you  have all had a lovely Easter break.

The weather has been getting better up here and in fact on Monday 28th April
north west Scotland was the hottest region in the UK !! at 20 C !!

This is certainly a lovely time of year wherever you happen to be
especially with all the lambs being born and luckily for us a neighbouring crofter
is using our field for his pregnant ewes, so we get to see the lambs close up.

One ear up and one ear down

Pink-eared and cute

Staying close to mum

It's not long before they find games to play on their own

Finding a new use for the old trailer that was left behind
Having a lovely dust bath

Mid morning gathering

The new veg patch complete with wind breaks !
Malcolm in the barn preparing for a demonstration on working with green wood
There seems to be a lot of old  boats laying around no longer wanted

Good to see you Kelvin and Sue, hope the blisters are ok

Easier walking on the sand !

The beautiful beaches of Gairloch mid morning in April

Progress on the barn

One of the things that we love about the site is the wonderful stone barn,
that we have since learned was the original house, built in 1879.

The barn in August 2013 when we moved to the croft

Removing the concrete render

The original builder's initials and date

Old roof coming off and the beginnings of the new roof and trusses
The colourful stage
Lovely new watertight roof ! The shacks either end are jobs for another day .
Beware oncoming traffic !
"Do I look fat in this coat ?"

Two week old wild kid on the roadside, Mum is keeping an eye from the bushes.

Around every corner is a deer

Patterns in the sand at low tide

Both eggs from our hens but the one on the left has no shell, weird to hold
The largest egg so far, eye watering !

"Why can't they just put the water in a dish ?"

Images of Feburary 2014

The weather here in the Highlands has been windy and wet but no where near as traumatic as the weather in England and Wales and luckily it has enabled us to get on with a few jobs around the croft. Here are a few images of February.

We do love a big skip ! Supplied by an obliging neighbour, thank you Murdo Macrae

and we filled it to the top !

All the old iron and the old roof has gone for recycling

How nice it is to see the grass again.

Our neighbour's sheep taking no notice of the view

Wilma running just for the fun of it

"I've been very good, so where's my bone ?"

Wilma after a hard day in the office.

The old chicken shed about to fall over in the next gale.
18 hens = 6/8 eggs a day = £1.40 income a day ( less feed/ straw/ housing/ time... ) economic ?

The "Hilton" of chicken sheds, designed and made by Malcolm.

A full rainbow over the croft, too wide for the camera lens.
