June 2021

Welcome folks to our June '21 blog,

hope you enjoy this month's photos.

Around the croft

With the warm, still, slightly damp weather out come the midgies and all sense of fashionable attire goes out the window,

that's if we had any fashion sense !

After reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer we're trying out an idea outlined in the chapter The Three Sisters.  Whereby 3 seeds; a kernel of corn, a bean and a squash are all planted in the same square foot of soil, each complimenting the others with nutrients, water. support and shade.

We'll see what happens.

The peaches in the greenhouse are almost ready, yum !!

Colours around the croft

Lime green is everywhere, my favourite colour, even our car is lime green !

I've just learnt that a bee can pollinate about 5,000 flowers in one day !!
In our polytunnel they just love nasturtiums.

Poem of the month

Leisure
by William Henry Davies
(1871 - 1940)

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep of cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Wilma

You know that your dog is getting old when you pop them in a shopping trolley to complete a walk and they don't complain !

Wilma quite enjoyed it and just went to sleep !

We love Wilma !!

A joke for you

This guy went to the zoo, looked around and there was nothing in it apart from a dog.

 It was a shih tzu.

(made me laugh, taken from an interview with Emma Bunton )

Quote of the month

photo from Ecological Consciousness Facebook page

"It's very important that we re-learn the art of resting and relaxation. Not only does it help prevent the onset of many illnesses that develop through chronic tension and worrying, it allows us to clear our minds, focus and find creative solutions to problems."

Thich Nhat Hanh

Books of the Month

Thank you Mike and Nicola for our lovely gift of this book,

a delightful read.

Every now and then it's lovely to take down an old book from the shelf, one of those with the faded cloth cover and black and white illustrations and get lost in the language of their time, like this one, "A Quiet Evening" by S L Bensusan    (1872  - 1958 )

(note for Barb, thanks for the tip !)
